#10 Waste and Greenhouse Gasses
Dairy cows produce a shocking amount of waste and greenhouse gasses. In California, cow-producing areas produce as much waste as a city of 21 million people! Even a relatively small farm with less than 200 cows produces as much nitrogen as a city of 5,000 people.
#9 Global Warming
The dairy industry eventually sells its cows to be slaughtered by the beef industry, which is considered one of the worst environmental catastrophes in the world. The UN found that cows put out 18% of the world’s carbon dioxide, more than planes, automobiles and other transportation combined.
#8 Calcium Deficiencies
Contrary to popular belief, cow’s milk is not the best source of calcium. New studies show milk is an acidifying protein, which winds up actually causing bones to leech. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine found that the countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most dairy milk.
#7 Too Many Calories
The FDA has long recommended three glasses of milk per day. However, in 2005 the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that this consumption, even if it’s low-fat milk, adds more than 300 calories to your diet a day.
#6 Cows Need to Be Milked
Cows need to be milked, right? Actually, that’s the biggest misconception about cows. They produce milk to feed their calves. If they don’t have babies to raise, they do not make milk. That means to induce milking in cows, farmers must create artificial conditions, which is bad for cows.
#5 Dairy Milk is for Calves
Dairy milk is for calves, not humans. It contains way more protein than human milk, which makes sense for raising young calves. Cow’s milk doesn’t contain the essential fatty acids or selenium that humans need.
#4 Weight Loss
The milk industry once promoted milk as “nature’s perfect food” that would actually help you lose weight. Unfortunately, this is false. A big study found that dairy can cause to weight gain. The FTC eventually banned the milk industry from using these misleading campaigns.
#3 Toxic Ingredients
Milk contains lots of toxic ingredients because over half of the antibiotics made in the US are given to livestock. Milk also contains pesticides, which find their way into your milk.
#2 Heart Health
Somehow people got the impression that drinking dairy milk was necessary for heart health. Milk is actually a source of saturated fat, which can clog your arteries. It also contains cholesterol. The more cholesterol, saturated fat and general fat you consume, the worst the risk of heart disease.
#1 Kids Need Milk?
Nope, kids don’t need milk. Once babies are off of breast milk or formula, milk is not necessary for their health. Milk has already been linked to colic in some babies and it also is a risk factor to type 1 diabetes.
