#10 Teddy Bridgewater’s Knee
What happened to Teddy Bridgewater is the stuff of nightmares for every player, coach and fan in the NFL: he suffered a potentially career-threatening injury during a no-contact practice. Bridgewater, the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, went down in practice with what was described as a dislocated knee – it turned out that he completely tore is ACL and suffered other “structural damage” to the knee.
#9 Andranik Karapetyan – Elbow
The 2016 Rio Olympics had a number of horrible injuries. Andranik Karapetyan, an Armenian weightlifter, was competing in the 77kg “clean and jerk” competition. When he got to the “jerk” part, he dislocated his elbow while trying to hoist 195kg (429 lbs). The elbow bent completely backwards.
#8 Samir Ait Said – Leg
French gymnast Samir Ait Said was competing in the vault during men’s gymnastics qualification. Said landed wrong and suffered a horrifying double break of his leg, which bent at an almost complete right angle.
#7 NaVorro Bowman – Knee
San Francisco 49ers defenseman NaVorro Bowman was playing against the Seahawks in 2015. His left leg got crushed by another player while he was standing up. The knee buckled and it was one of the worst-looking injuries ever captured on film. Bowman tore his MCL and ACL.
#6 Rashad Jennings – Finger
Football can be a brutal game, but normally the injures involve arms and legs. Rashad Jennings of the Arizona Cardinals suffered a freak injury in 2013 when he jammed his finger into the ground. At first it appeared that the finger got caught in an opponent’s face mask. The tip of his middle finger was literally ripped off.
#5 Kevin Ware – Leg
Millions of people saw Louisville’s Kevin Ware break his leg, with the bone piercing through the skin, after CBS sports put the replay on repeat during an NCAA tournament game in 2013. Ware landed wrong and the leg snapped at a right angle.
#4 Jessica Dube – Cheek
A cheek injury? Really? Really – the injury suffered by figure skater Jessica Dube is enough to make even the toughest man queasy. In February 2007, Dube was skating with her partner Bryce Davidson when his skate blade sliced her across the face. Dube received 83 stitches on her left cheek. Despite being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder, Dube returned to the ice 4 weeks later.
#3 Mike Cameron – Jaw/Face
Mike Cameron was playing the outfield for the New York Mets when he was racing toward a pop fly. The problem was that his teammate Carlos Beltran was running to the ball as well. When the two collided in air, it quickly became obvious that both had broken bones. Cameron had it worse, suffering facial fractures and a concussion, and a crushed jaw that also needed surgery.
#2 Max Pacioretty – Head and Neck
Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens was knocked out of the game with a brutal head injury and a non-displaced fractured fourth cervical vertebra in his neck after Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara smashed him into a glass partition. The local police investigated Chara after the incident.
#1 Richard Zednik – Carotid Artery
During a February 10, 2008 game between the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres, Olli Jokinen fell to the ice, and his skate suddenly came up and cut teammate Richard Zednik’s throat. The cut severed Zednik’s carotid artery and barely missed his jugular vein.
