Carl Linder dropped out of high school to deliver milk for his family’s dairy farm. Lindner took a $1,200 loan to open an ice cream shop with his siblings in 1940. By 1959, Lindner had moved on to savings and loan companies, and then insurance companies, assembling them under one wealthy banner. Lindner purchased the Cincinnati Reds. He also bought United Foods in 1984, turned it into United Dairy Farmers and made $1.7 billion – an empire made of ice cream and convenience stores.
